IUEC Local 8 was the first application that made the competition feel real.
I knew elevator work had a strong reputation. I knew the pay and benefits looked good. What I did not understand yet was how fast an application window could close.
The opening I applied for had a cap.
The first 700 applicants.
That was it.
I was sitting at my computer before 9 a.m., refreshing the page and waiting for the button to appear. When it finally did, it felt less like filling out an application and more like trying to get concert tickets.
Enter the information.
Do not make a typo.
Do not freeze.
Submit.
I remember feeling relieved when the application went through. Out of curiosity, I checked again a few minutes later from another browser. By about 9:05, it was already full.
That was the first time I really understood that wanting the opportunity was not enough. You have to be ready before the window opens.
If you are applying to a union with a capped application window, do not wait until the morning of to figure things out.
Have your documents ready.
Know your work history.
Know your education information.
Use a reliable internet connection.
Make sure your browser works.
Be early.
That sounds basic, but when the window closes in minutes, basic preparation matters.
I was lucky that I had paid attention to the date and time. I was also new enough to the process that I did not fully appreciate how rare some openings can be.
That changed after Local 8.
From that point on, I started treating application windows like part of the test.
Because in a way, they are.
If you miss the window, you may not even get the chance to prove yourself.
