UA Local 393’s ranking system felt different from the other lists I had dealt with.
At least in my experience, the rank was based on the test. There was no interview in the process I went through.
That made the test feel heavier.
It also made the result feel clearer.
You test with a batch. You rank within that batch. People from earlier lists may still be ahead of you, but your spot in your group is your spot.
That was different from IBEW 332, where my rank could move as new applicants came through and scored above or below me.
I am not saying one system is better.
I am saying they feel different as an applicant.
A moving list can keep you checking and guessing. A batch-based list can feel more stable, but you still have to understand who is ahead of you and how fast calls are going out.
For UA 393, ranking in the top 10 of my batch felt strong. But there were still people from the previous list ahead.
That means the number alone does not tell the whole story.
You need context.
If you are applying anywhere, try to understand how the rank works:
- Is it test-only?
- Is there an interview?
- Do new applicants change your rank?
- Are batches called in order?
- How long does the list stay active?
- How many people are ahead from previous lists?
Those details affect how you read your result.
They also affect your expectations.
I think that is one of the hardest parts of apprenticeship applications. You get a number, but you may not know what the number means in real life.
Is it good?
Is it okay?
Is it dead?
Sometimes you only learn by waiting.
UA 393 gave me the strongest feeling of momentum so far.
Now the work is waiting without getting lazy.
Because until the call comes, the process is not over.
